A FTSE 100 gain of roughly 0.08% flatters what happened in Europe on the day, because the story across the Channel in Paris was very different.
The CAC 40 fell 1.32%, weighing on the broader European picture, and any fund with meaningful eurozone exposure will have felt that drag even if UK-only holdings looked steady.
London's finish came late: the FTSE spent a meaningful portion of the day below its previous close before settling just above the flat line.
For investors holding Europe-wide index funds, the CAC 40's fall of more than a full percentage point is large enough to pull down the regional average, so broad European exposure absorbed more of the session's losses than the London close alone suggests.
