Tech is carrying the whole market today: the Nasdaq is up 0.71% while the Dow sits in the red, so anything outside big tech is missing the move. Breadth this narrow rarely lasts into the close.

The S&P 500 is up 0.5% to 7,762 at midday, but the gain is almost entirely a tech story. The Nasdaq Composite is higher while the Dow Jones Industrial Average is in the red, moving opposite the headline index.

The rally has a narrow foundation. When a handful of large-cap tech names are doing the heavy lifting, the index level flatters what is actually happening across most stocks.

Narrow breadth like this has a history of not holding through the close. If tech softens even slightly in the afternoon session, the S&P 500's gain compresses quickly because there is little support underneath it from other sectors.

Investors positioned outside of large-cap technology are effectively missing today's move entirely. The question heading into the final hours of trading is whether tech can sustain its bid or whether the Dow's weakness is the truer signal of where sentiment sits.
