London took the worst of it, closing down 0.45% with the Bank of England's rate decision days away. The DAX held nearly flat, so this was a UK problem more than a European one.

The FTSE 100 closed at 14,378, shedding 65 points after trimming a decline that ran close to 1% earlier in the day.
The selling was concentrated in London: the DAX finished near flat, pointing to something specific weighing on UK-listed stocks.
