S&P 500 Slides to 7,581 at Midday as Blue Chips Bear the Brunt

MIDDAY
U.S. Markets
  • S&P 500-0.50%
  • Dow Jones Industrial Average-0.96%
  • Nasdaq Composite-0.70%

The Dow is carrying the damage at midday, down 500 points and nearly twice the S&P 500's decline, so the selling is hitting old-economy blue chips harder than tech. Rate-hike odds are doing the work here, and the afternoon session decides whether this holds.

The S&P 500 is down about 0.5% at 7,581.95 as of midday, pulling back from a previous close of 7,619.96.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is absorbing the heavier blow, off roughly 1% at midday, nearly twice the S&P 500's percentage decline. That gap points to selling concentrated in old-economy blue chips that carry less weight in the S&P 500. The Nasdaq Composite is also lower.

Rate-hike odds are the driving force behind the pressure. When the market reprices the likelihood of tighter monetary policy, interest-rate-sensitive and capital-intensive businesses tend to feel it first, which helps explain why the Dow is lagging the other indexes today.

The afternoon session is the next key moment. Midday readings can shift meaningfully in the final two hours of trading, and whether sellers hold conviction or buyers step in will determine where the S&P 500 closes relative to that 7,619.96 prior close.
