Giving up 2.8% mortgage rate

u/elizaberries 111 upvotes 398 comments

Me personally, I would build an office in my backyard before I gave up my VERY affordable mortgage. Life is unpredictable. A job can go away without warning. Having cheap housing is blessing that millions wish that they had.

Trading a 2.8% mortgage for today's 7% rates more than doubles this family's housing payment, from $1.4k to $3k, and forces them to cut 401(k) contributions. The 398-comment pile-on is the lock-in effect in miniature: cheap debt is now an asset people defend harder than the house itself.
