The S&P touched a session low of roughly 0.64% in the red before trimming losses, leaving the index in a tug of war heading into the afternoon.
Whether this becomes a third consecutive leg lower hinges on how the afternoon session trades. A close near current levels would represent a meaningful give-back, and traders will be watching whether the Dow's heavier selling pressure bleeds further into the broader index before the bell.
