The S&P 500 ended the session essentially unchanged, shedding just 3.22 points to settle at 7,754.24 — a loss of less than a tenth of a percent from the previous close of 7,757.46. That modest decline masked a more uneven day beneath the surface: the Dow Jones Industrial Average fell about 0.33%, or roughly 177 points, while the Nasdaq Composite dropped about 0.32%, suggesting that large-cap technology and blue-chip names felt more pressure than the broader index let on.

The intraday picture was notably choppy. The S&P 500 spent a meaningful stretch of the morning in positive territory, at one point gaining as much as 0.23% before sellers took control in the afternoon and pushed the index to a session low near -0.13%. The index clawed back most of that late weakness, but could not quite reclaim flat by the closing bell.

Attention now turns to next week's inflation data, which arrives with the Federal Reserve's September policy path still unresolved. Until that report clarifies the pricing picture, traders are likely to remain cautious about committing to a direction.
