Aurora Innovation develops and commercializes the Aurora Driver, a self-driving system for Class 8 trucks that runs driverless commercial freight loads in the U.S., starting with Sun Belt corridors such as Dallas–Laredo. The company earns revenue by hauling commercial loads, both driverless and supervised by a vehicle operator, under a Transportation as a Service (TaaS) model. It is moving toward a Driver as a Service (DaaS) model, in which carriers such as Charger Logistics own and operate Aurora Driver-powered trucks. Truck production follows a phased plan:
- Upfitting at Roush, targeting more than 1,000 trucks of annualized capacity.
- Lineside integration and full OEM industrialization with Volvo (Volvo VNL Autonomous).
- Integration with PACCAR (Peterbilt and Kenworth).
- A Hardware as a Service partnership with AUMOVIO for third-generation automotive-grade hardware kits.
The company remains loss-making and pre-scale. It funds operations from more than $1 billion in cash and short-term investments, supplemented by issuing equity through its at-the-market (ATM) program. Its stated goals are to exit 2027 with more than 1,000 driverless trucks and 2030 with 30,000+ trucks on the road. Updated
