Sunrun Inc. (Nasdaq: RUN) provides residential battery storage, solar energy systems, and home-to-grid power plants in the United States. It describes itself as America's largest provider in this category.
The company pioneered home energy systems offered through a no-upfront-cost subscription model. Customers sign power purchase agreements or leases (Customer Agreements), and Sunrun funds system creation with tax equity, non-recourse debt, investment tax credit transfers, and sales of systems to third-party investors. It also sells systems directly to purchase customers.
Revenue comes from two lines:
- Customer agreements and incentives
- Energy systems and product sales, which since Q3 2025 includes sales of storage and energy systems under newly originated Customer Agreements to a third party, with Sunrun retaining the customer servicing relationship
As of September 30, 2026, Sunrun had 1,229,709 customers, including 1,057,695 subscribers. It also had about 5.0 GWh of Networked Storage Capacity and 8,936 MW of Networked Solar Capacity.
The company follows a storage-first strategy, with a 75% storage attachment rate in Q3 2026. It aggregates home batteries into distributed power plants that dispatch power to the grid, and is pursuing data center and grid-edge applications for its network. Updated
