McDonald's 1,000 Calorie Breakfast

Among the efforts McDonald’s (NYSE: MCD) is counting on to turn itself around is its “24 Hour Breakfast”, and a move to lower calorie, lower fat fast food than it sold in the past. However, a look at the breakfast menu shows McDonald’s still relies on its tradition menu. Evidence is the 1,000 breakfast customers can easily buy.

The new menu includes old items. Among them, McCafe Mocha, which contains 340 calories. Match that coffee with the pancakes and sausages at 510 calories, and the hash browns with 150 calories and it’s a perfect 1,000 calorie meal with close to 40g of fat. Measure that against the FDA’s 2,000 calorie a day, low fate, low sodium diet.

As for the FDA’s guide to restaurant and packaged food eating:

Follow these guidelines when using processed foods or eating in restaurants:

  • Choose lean meats and poultry. Bake it, broil it, or grill it.

  • In a restaurant, opt for steamed, grilled, or broiled dishes instead of those that are fried or sautéed.

  • Look on product labels for foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol. Most of the fats you eat should come from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, such as those found in some types of fish, nuts, and vegetable oils.

  • Check product labels for foods high in potassium (unless you’ve been advised to restrict the amount of potassium you eat). Potassium counteracts some of the effects of salt on blood pressure.

  • Choose foods and beverages low in added sugars. Read the ingredient list to make sure that added sugars are not among the first ingredients. Ingredients in the largest amounts are listed first. Some names for added sugars include sucrose, glucose, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, maple syrup, and fructose. The nutrition facts on the product label give the total sugar content.

  • Pick foods that provide dietary fiber, like fruits, beans, vegetables, and whole grains

It has been four years since McDonald’s signed on with Michelle Obama’s healthy food movement, particularly improving the quality of the Happy Meal, which is consumed largely by children. Maybe McDonald’s has shifted its food choices in this direction. However, it is not hard to order a breakfast which is remarkably rich in both calories and fat.
