The New York Times reports that the total number of downloadable apps has reached 1 million. Most of these are built for Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) products which include the iPhone and iPad. The next company, in terms of volume, is apps for Google’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) Android OS.
The paper writes
According to Mobilewalla, in a fairly quiet 14 days before the release of app No. 1,000,000, an average of 543 apps were released each day for Android-based devices, and an average of 745 apps hit the market daily for the iPhone, iPad and iTouch. The total for the two weeks across the Apple, Android, BlackBerry and Windows platforms was 20,738.
The number does not mean that most of the apps make money. A huge number are free. These may have promotional value, or lead to the purchase of paid products, but their money-making prospects are in question.
