Nokia Returns To US With Cheap Phone

Nokia (NYSE: NOK) brought the first of its new generation of it smartphones to the US as its launched its Lumia 710 with T-Mobile. The handset will cost $50 with a subscription to the cellular company’s service. It will run Microsoft (NASDAQ: MSFT) Windows OS which has not found a large customer base

The Nokia phone is relatively inexpensive compared to most other high-end handsets. That may make it a large draw, but it probably means the product will not compete with Apple (NASDAQ: AAPL) or Research In Motion (NASDAQ:RIMM). The release on T-Mobile raises the question of why it could not launch with a larger carriers–Sprint-Nextel (NYSE: S), Verizon Wireless, or AT&T (NYSE: T)

Nokia has yet to demonstrate it can get any sales out of the American market which it has largely been shut out of. Nokia still has a market in low end phones around the world which has kept it as the largest handset manufacturer by units sold
