Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) will begin inspecting its 787 Dreamliners for a possible delamination problem in the plane’s carbon-fiber fuselage. One of the aircraft, which is now owned by Japan’s All Nippon Airlines, has reported the problem.
The company says it has identified the cause of the problem and is working on a fix. The issue is not that the Dreamliner’s skin is peeling off, but that the laminated layers of carbon-fiber that make up the skin are peeling apart. The problem is not with the design of the aircraft, but with its production. At this point, there is no safety issue and the Dreamliners will continue to fly.
