Japan’s Sanyo Electric Co. will close its Carson, California, solar wafer plant and fire about 140 workers by Ocober, according to a report from Bloomberg New. The small plant produces about 30 megawatts of wafers annually and the work will be transferred to a new Sanyo plant being completed in Malaysia.

The California plant has been in operation since 2003, but expansion was not an option due both to its small size and price competition from China. Sanyo will continue — for now — its ingot and wafer operations at a 70-megawatt plant in Oregon. The capacity of the Malaysian plant is set to be 300 megawatts, and it is scheduled to begin production in December.
