Google Deal for Motorola to Get US Approval (GOOG, MMI, AAPL, MSFT, RIMM, SNE, ERIC, EMC)

Sometime next week, the US Department of Justice is expected to give its stamp of approval to Google Inc.’s (NASDAQ: GOOG) $12.5 billion acquisition of Motorola Mobility Holdings Inc. (NYSE: MMI) and its 17,000 patents related to mobile phone and wireless technology. Bloomberg News cites unnamed sources for the story.

The DoJ is also expected to approve the $4.5 billion acquisition of some 6,000 patents belonging to bankrupt Nortel Network Corp. by a consortium that includes Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL), Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT), Research in Motion Ltd. (NASDAQ: RIMM), Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE), LM Ericsson Telephone Co. (NASDAQ: ERIC), and EMC Corp. (NYSE: EMC).

The Google-Motorola deal also needs approval from the European Commission, and a ruling from that body is due next week as well.
