Applied Digital Jumps 10% as Data Center Stocks Rebound; Riot Climbs 7%, Core Scientific Gains 4%
Applied Digital's top executives started buying shares after a steep selloff, and now the stock is surging back alongside Riot and Core Scientific. Whether that insider conviction holds up against a heavy debt load and a critical construction deadline is…
AI data center stocks are rallying, and the strongest gains belong to the operators building high-performance computing capacity for hyperscale tenants. Applied Digital (NASDAQ:APLD) stock is at $19.56, up 10%, marking the biggest rebound in the group. Even with the jump, Applied Digital shares are down 20% year to date (YTD), a measure of how far the stock fell before its top executives stepped in as buyers.
Meanwhile, Riot Platforms (NASDAQ:RIOT | RIOT Price Prediction) stock is at $13.44, up 7%, clearing the broader data center group by a wide margin. Core Scientific (NASDAQ:CORZ) stock is at $14.10, up 4%, the smallest of the three operator gains but firmly in step with the rebound.
At the sector level, the Global X Data Center & Digital Infrastructure ETF (NASDAQ:DTCR) is up 2%, a far smaller gain than any of the three operators. The SPDR S&P 500 ETF Trust (NYSEARCA:SPY) is up 0.6%, so the broad market is lending only modest support to the data center trade.
Data Center Operators Lead the AI Infrastructure Rebound
That gap between those operators and the Global X fund shows where the buying is landing. Data center real estate owners and tower companies fill the fund’s four largest positions, and Applied Digital stock carried a 4.5% weight as of May 31, a small slice next to those landlords.
Applied Digital hosts high-performance computing workloads for hyperscale customers and provides energized space to crypto miners, while Core Scientific serves both Bitcoin mining and high-performance computing, and Riot produces the cryptocurrency and is developing its power for data center use.
Riot stock is up 6% YTD, while Core Scientific shares are down 3% over the same span. Mining gives both companies a second revenue stream, though it also ties part of their results to Bitcoin’s swings, and each shift toward data center leasing carries the upside case for Riot and Core Scientific, along with the same construction and financing risks facing Applied Digital.
APLD Stock: The Bull and Bear Cases
Hyperscale hosting anchors the bull case for Applied Digital, and the question is how quickly that business fills new capacity. As of August 31, the company had 1.41 GW (gigawatts) of leased critical IT load across five campuses, representing about $36 billion of contracted revenue over initial base terms. Earlier this month, chief executive and chairman Wes Cummins and president Jason Zhang each bought Applied Digital shares in the open market after the stock had fallen sharply.
The bear case is that Applied Digital’s build-out depends on financing and tenants arriving on schedule, and insider buying leaves that dependence unchanged. Debt at Applied Digital already finances part of the plan. The company closed $1.59 billion of 7% senior secured notes to fund a third high-performance computing building at Polaris Forge 1, planned at 150 MW (megawatts). Delays at any campus could push rental revenue further out while interest costs keep accruing.
Applied Digital’s Insider Buying Meets Its Build-Out Timeline
Applied Digital expects initial operations at Polaris Forge 2 in Harwood to lift delivered critical IT load across its North Dakota campuses to 300 MW by the end of this year. That target gives the insider purchases a near-term checkpoint, since powered megawatts are what convert signed leases into rental revenue.
The next test for Applied Digital is whether it signs another hyperscale lease to fill the capacity it’s bringing online. The company has also secured up to 1 GW of potential power capacity in Finland, a longer-dated option. Investors weighing their APLD share exposure should be aware of the stock’s volatility and financing risks when sizing their positions.
