Coinbase’s Binance-Linked Selloff Is Hitting Your Crypto Funds Too
A $6.3 billion heist at Binance and a disappointing earnings report hit Coinbase on the same morning, and the damage spread far beyond investors who own the stock directly.
Shares of Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN | COIN Price Prediction) fell 11.47% in Friday’s session to $142.17 as of 9:45 AM ET. That continues a slide that has the stock down 25.18% over the past month and 37.13% year to date. For ETF holders, the drop reaches every fund that owns the stock, and in some crypto-equity funds Coinbase is one of the biggest positions.
Two Same-Day Hits Sent Coinbase Lower
Coinbase did not issue a press release on Friday. Same-day headlines pointed to a selloff across crypto stocks after Binance froze assets following a reported $6.3 billion heist, according to a post from the markets news account DeItaone on X. Barron’s added that crypto investors should still worry even though U.S.-listed crypto names are separate from Binance.
The heist news landed on top of a mixed earnings report released Thursday after the close. Coinbase posted GAAP diluted EPS of $2.51, beating a $0.07 consensus, but $715.0 million of gains on crypto assets held for investment did much of the work. Adjusted net income was only $77.7 million. Revenue of $1.22 billion came in just short of expectations and fell 35.0% year over year. On the earnings call, the company’s chief financial officer, Alesia Haas, said overall crypto spot trading volume fell 10% quarter over quarter, with growth in prediction markets making up for the decline.
Analysts lowered their targets on Friday. Barclays cut its target to $120 from $149, Wells Fargo cut to $174 from $200 and Jefferies cut to $174 from $183.
Crypto-Equity Funds Carry the Heaviest Exposure
Coinbase makes up the largest share of the Bitwise Crypto Industry Innovators ETF (NYSEARCA:BITQ). It was the fund’s biggest holding at 9.998% of net assets as of June 30, 2026. If that weight still holds, today’s move alone takes about 1.15 percentage points off the fund. Most of BITQ’s other top holdings are bitcoin miners and crypto treasury companies that usually trade on the same news.
The ARK Innovation ETF (NYSEARCA:ARKK) held a $231.8 million Coinbase stake, or 4.17% of net assets, as of July 31, 2026. ARKK fell 4.91% to $81.75 early Friday. Coinbase accounts for only about 0.48 percentage points of that drop, which shows how much the fund’s other stablecoin, brokerage and crypto-platform holdings fell alongside it.
The Amplify Transformational Data Sharing ETF (NYSEARCA:BLOK) held Coinbase at 2.28% of net assets as of June 30. It still fell 5.72% to $51.56, because its other holdings (miners, exchanges and trading apps) are just as sensitive to crypto sentiment.
| Fund | COIN Weight | Holdings Date | Friday Move | One Month | YTD |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| BITQ | 9.998% | June 30 | N/A | N/A | N/A |
| ARKK | 4.17% | July 31 | -4.91% | -8.61% | +6.28% |
| BLOK | 2.28% | June 30 | -5.72% | -16.8% | -9.25% |
In thematic funds, concentration builds on itself. When the largest holding and the next ten positions all react to the same crypto headlines, a fund’s day can look a lot like the sector’s worst day.
Index Fund Holders Face Smaller but Real Overlap Risk
The Invesco QQQ Trust (NASDAQ:QQQ) held no Coinbase shares as of June 30, 2026. Its index covers the largest non-financial companies listed on NASDAQ exchanges, and Coinbase is classified in financial services.
Broad-market funds do own Coinbase, which joined the S&P 500 in 2025, so S&P 500 trackers, total-market funds and many target-date funds hold it. With a market value of about $31.68 billion, its weight in those funds is small, and a day like Friday barely moves them.
Overlap is where retirement savers can get caught. An IRA that pairs an S&P 500 core with ARKK or BITQ as a growth satellite owns Coinbase several times over, plus a collection of stocks that move with crypto. Comparing each fund’s holdings against the others shows the part of the portfolio tied to one theme.
Q4 Guidance and Fund Filings Come Next
For the fourth quarter, Coinbase reported quarter-to-date transaction revenue of about $165 million through October 25 and guided subscription and services revenue to $550 million to $630 million. Management warned that trading volume could swing in the near term as it finishes integrating Deribit and INTX. Coinbase still has $2.0 billion left on its buyback authorization. The next round of fund holdings disclosures will show whether managers trimmed Coinbase or added more during the slide.
