Amazon's Upcoming Sales Pricing on Electronics Gear

Retailers typically don’t preannounce sale pricing on items until the special price takes effect because they don’t want to cannibalize sales at the going price. Amazon.com Inc. (NASDAQ: AMZN) is not a typical retailer.

The company’s website includes pages of deals in a variety of categories, so we took a look at the electronics deals available Friday morning and clicked through on the “Upcoming” link to see what we could look forward to later in the day. An interesting exercise and one that raises the question of why Amazon would do this.

One reason could be to lure customers in and then try to sell them a more expensive version of the product, a so-called upsell. Another would be to encourage customers to buy a related product, the famous cross-sell. Our guess on many of these, though, is that Amazon just has too much inventory and wants to move the product. Here are some examples.

A ViewSonic 22-inch LED-lit LCD monitor (VX2252MH) that is currently selling for $129.99, a savings of 40% to the list price of $217.00. The upcoming price is not shown and won’t be active until 11:30 a.m. ET. The monitor ships free.

Starting at the same time is upcoming pricing on a LaView 6 1080p Camera Security System with a 2 TB hard drive and six cameras. The system is currently selling for $752.01, a discount of 6% to the regular price of $799.99.

And what we might think of as an early-bird special, a Silicon Power 128GB Blaze B30 USB 3.0 swivel flash drive (SP128GBUF3B30V1K) that is selling now before the special pricing for $27.99, a 20% discount to the $34.99 price. No free shipping unless the entire order tops $49, unless you’re a Prime member. The upcoming deal begins at 9:30 a.m. ET.

Speaking of Prime, members get a 30-minute early-access period to all upcoming sale items.
