FLIRone-night vision

FLIR Systems Inc.
Want to see in the dark and look behind walls? FLIR Systems Inc. (NASDAQ: FLIR) has just the gizmo for you. The FLIR One case for an Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) iPhone 5 or 5s offers you the chance to do this without those cumbersome (and decidedly unfashionable) night vision goggles we’ve all seen in the movies.

The case has its own battery pack and two cameras. One of the cameras is infrared to let you see the heat image and the other is a VGA camera that sharpens the image enough so you know what you’re looking at. FLIR also supplies a free app that lets iPhone users scan things for their thermal properties and then capture the image.

The device has a wide range of possible uses, according to the company. A homeowner could use the FLIR One to identify heat loss, energy inefficiency and even water leaks around the house. The case could also be used for night filming of wildlife or to help find a lost pet. The case even has a time-lapse feature that would permit a user to string together a series of thermal images into a time-lapse video.

The FLIR One weighs 3.9 ounces and its rechargeable battery is good for about two hours of continuous use. The company began taking preorders at its website last week, and the $349.99 device is expected to ship to customers beginning August 4. The FLIR One will also be sold at Apple’s website and at Apple retail stores.
