The Nikkei 225 opened the August 28 session at 66,131.98 with zero net change, a stillness that reflects traders unwilling to commit capital in either direction ahead of a Bank of Japan rate decision.

The rate question matters most to Japan's large export-oriented companies, because a stronger yen compresses the overseas earnings exporters convert back into Japanese currency.

The index reversed from the high 68,000s and has been finding its footing in the sessions since.

Until the BOJ's rate path is clear, exporter stocks are the most sensitive lever to watch when any announcement arrives.
