Will a Larger iPhone Bring Back Fanny Packs?

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) is expected to bring out two new sizes for the iPhone 6 launch on Tuesday, September 9. What this really entails will not be formally known quite yet, but the reality is that the public seems to want larger smartphones. There is just one problem that will be specific to male customers, which Tim Cook may have to address down the road after everyone starts buying larger format smartphones: Where are people going to keep or carry their larger iPhones when they are not at home or at their desks?

Smartphones already create a bulge in your front pocket or a jacket pocket as is. What about larger phone formats? Most men still have an aversion to carrying a man-purse (a “murse” or “packet,” if you will). The 4.7-inch version likely would mean that there are larger screen margins on the phone, but a 5.5-inch screen is large enough that many people will be unable to carry the phone comfortably in their pockets. Is the fanny pack about to stage a miraculous comeback?

While it may seem a little satirical to wonder about the return of a fanny pack, a larger phone does create a potential carrying issue. After having had one of the first Android phones that was huge and after seeing larger phones from other makers, it has been impossible to ignore that carrying the phones is more of a challenge. The HTC One has a 5-inch screen display, but ranges are roughly 5.41-inches to 5.76-inches for the total height of the phone.

Before you wonder just how real the potential is for men who have a larger iPhone now having to consider accessories for the phone, ask about a significant recent hire by Apple. In late 2013 Apple hired Angela Ahrendts away from Burberry. That was to polish up the image of Apple’s online store, but she probably could have a lot of input on what accessories men may actually buy.

Are men about to be forced to coordinate their shoes with whatever they carry a larger iPhone in?

One last word of advice if the fanny pack does somehow make a miraculous comeback: Please don’t ask where you can buy a fanny pack in the United Kingdom. You probably won’t like the answer to the inquiry.

Sometimes there truly is a lighter side of financial news, although the how-to-carry question still stands.
