A burst of interest in the Nook tablets from Barnes & Noble Inc. (NYSE: BKS) is causing the company to increase orders on its manufacturers. That’s good news for B&N, but even with the increase the Nook trails far behind the iPad from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) and the Kindle family of e-readers and tablets from Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN).

Taiwan’s DigiTimes reports that B&N has taken shipments of 1 million Nook tablets against an original expectation of 800,000. Unnamed sources told DigiTimes,

Barnes & Noble has been increasing its orders to upstream component suppliers as well as OEM contractor Inventec due to strong sales in retail channels during the Thanksgiving holiday season in North America

Apple is expected to sell about 13 million iPads in the current quarter, and Amazon’s Kindle fire tablet, which was launched in mid-November, is expected to sell 5 million units by the end of December.

Amazon is said to be selling the tablets at near or less than cost, expecting to make up the revenue on sales of e-books and other media. Given the robust sales of the Nook, B&N make want to take a similar approach.
