Senator Max Baucus from Montana has chosen to retire from the U.S. Senate and will not run for election again in 2014. This matters as Baucus is one of the top Democratic senators who has been a key figure in many of the “reform” efforts in America. Baucus is also chairman of the Senate Finance Committee and has ties to the ongoing and persistent bank reform efforts. He has been very instrumental in health care reform and tax reform, and tax policy as well. Other Baucus duties and assignments include:

  • Member of the Senate Agriculture Committee
  • Senior member of the Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, and chairman of the Transportation Subcommittee
  • Vice chairman of the Joint Committee on Taxation

The Baucus site at the Senate says:

Max is chairman of the Senate Finance Committee. He is using his post to reform the nation’s health care system, cut taxes for hard-working Montanans and Americans, protect Social Security from being privatized and open new markets for trade.

Be advised that as of 10:45 a.m. EST there has still been no formal confirmation on the Max Baucus website under the newsroom.
