ServiceNow’s 19% Crash Says Wall Street Thinks AI Will Eat Software. Its OpenAI Deal Says the Opposite.

ServiceNow stock cratered 19% the same morning it announced a major partnership with OpenAI, which means one of those two signals badly misreads where AI is headed for enterprise software.

ServiceNow (NYSE:NOW | NOW Price Prediction) shares fell 19% in premarket trading on October 29, 2026, after third-quarter results filed on October 28, 2026. MarketWatch reported the stock was on track for its largest drop on record. Alongside those results, ServiceNow announced a bigger partnership with OpenAI. One piece is a plugin that lets customers use the ServiceNow platform from inside ChatGPT.

NOW price target

So the market priced ServiceNow as an AI casualty on the same day the best-known AI lab plugged into it. One of those two signals is wrong.

What ServiceNow and OpenAI Actually Signed Up For

Here is what was announced: a ServiceNow plugin for ChatGPT, a Codex integration in AI Workflow Factory and voice-driven governance. One item is only a plan so far: Security and Risk solutions powered by OpenAI cyber models. The companies did not disclose financial terms, revenue sharing, exclusivity or how long the deal runs. OpenAI is private, so no one outside can check its financials.

ServiceNow also launched a Control Tower Alliance, a partner group built around its Super Intelligence Control Tower, software that tracks and monitors a company’s AI agents. NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA) joined; members include Anthropic, OpenAI and NVIDIA.

The quarter itself was mixed. Revenue of $4.11 billion increased 20.5% and came in $20 million above consensus. Adjusted EPS was $1, against a Wall Street analyst consensus of $1.02. The real damage came from guidance. ServiceNow forecast fourth-quarter total revenue to $4.25 billion to $4.26 billion, while the Wall Street analyst consensus was $4.36 billion.

Three Software Giants Repriced in One Morning

ServiceNow: Bill McDermott said net new annual contract value from AI products (new yearly contract dollars from AI deals) increased 65%. ServiceNow raised its full-year AI ACV target to $1.7 billion. That target is still small next to a $155.21B market cap, so the ChatGPT plugin matters more as a way to protect the business than as a new revenue line.

Salesforce (NYSE:CRM) slipped 5% premarket even though nothing in the OpenAI news involves it. Agentforce ARR (annual recurring revenue) exceeded $1.5 billion, which is solid evidence that the incumbents can sell AI.

Adobe (NASDAQ:ADBE) fell 3% premarket and is down 30% year to date, even with AI-first ARR increased more than 150%.

What the Announcement Left Out

The bear case is simple. If ChatGPT becomes the screen employees work from, OpenAI owns the customer relationship. Amit Zavery’s answer is that the work still runs inside ServiceNow: “We get full value for it from the monetization perspective because you’re burning down assist for every work you’d ask ServiceNow to do.” That sounds reasonable, but Gemini Enterprise offers the same front-door access, and the alliance includes OpenAI’s rival Anthropic. Nothing here is exclusive.

Current RPO (contracted revenue due over the next 12 months) is forecast to grow 18.5% in Q4. That is a slowdown. The CFO blamed “strong early renewals in Q3” that brought business forward. And McDermott calling this an “inflection point” is exactly what any CEO would say.

NOW price scenario

I’ve been investing in software since buying Shopify (NASDAQ:SHOP) in April 2017. I own NVIDIA, which sits in the alliance, but none of these three software names.

Is ServiceNow Really an AI Loser?

No. In my view, the market is selling a fear and discounting a revenue beat, 20% growth and a second increase to the AI target. If you believe the AI layer still needs a place where work actually gets done, ServiceNow is worth exploring. If you think ChatGPT will take over that layer too, then this selloff is only the start.

NOW analyst ratings

Here is the test you can check: the Q4 earnings report. If revenue tops the Wall Street analyst consensus of $4.36 billion and AI ACV passes $1.7 billion, the bears were wrong. If revenue falls short again, the plugin with OpenAI looks like a company letting a competitor sit between it and its own customers.
