A $1,000 stake in Tesla (NASDAQ:TSLA | TSLA Price Prediction) buys a small piece of a company that wants to be much more than a carmaker. Shares were trading around $383.33 in midday trading, and the forecast model starts from a reference price of $386.47.

Tesla just reported a quarter with its highest backlog in four years, so this is a good moment to look at where a $1,000 position could stand by 2030.

What $1,000 Could Become by 2030

In the base case, a $1,000 investment could be worth about $1,182.08 by 2030, a total return of 18.21%. That figure comes from the model’s base-case share price of $456.84 for October 22, 2030.

One point on timing: the model forecasts out to one year and five years. Its five-year horizon ends on October 22, 2031, so that endpoint is the anchor.

The 2030 numbers are interim milestones along that five-year path, and you should treat them as illustrative. If you hold the full five years, the model’s central scenario raises the $1,000 to $1,269.40, a 26.94% total return, or 4.89% a year.

Bull, Base and Bear Scenarios for Your $1,000

Scenario Target Price Total Return Value of $1,000
Bull (2030 milestones) $584.92 51.35% $1,513.49
Base (2030 milestones) $456.84 18.21% $1,182.08
Bear (2030 milestones) $386.22 -0.06% $999.35

Bear (5-year, Oct. 2031) $395.68 2.38% $1,023.80

Over the closer term, the model’s one-year target is $404.84, which is 4.75% upside. That earns a hold rating because the stock trades close to fair value. Model confidence is 0.9.

Wall Street sits in a similar spot. The consensus target is $397.83, and ratings break down as 4 Strong Buy, 15 Buy, 21 Hold, 2 Sell and 2 Strong Sell. The projection should not be read as investment advice.

Three Growth Engines Behind the Upside

FSD Turning Into Recurring Revenue

Tesla now counts more than 1.7 million paid FSD customers. In North America, more than 75% of deliveries came with a paid FSD sign-up. On the earnings call, Elon Musk said “the biggest driver for demand is full self-driving.” Software revenue that keeps coming after the car is sold could raises lifetime profit per vehicle.

Robotaxi Scaling Beyond Austin

Unsupervised miles increased 8x in the quarter, and Dallas is set to launch next month. Management expects some customer-owned vehicles to join the Robotaxi fleet around Q2 next year, and it says Robotaxi could become a significant contributor to revenue and profitability in 2027.

Energy Storage Demand From Data Centers

Musk said Tesla is “almost sold out of all Megapacks for 2027,” and energy gross margin rose from 20.4% to 33.1%. Part of that jump came from one-time tariff and warranty items. Analysts expect EPS to grow from $1.7421 in 2026 to $2.1457 in 2027. Tesla also repeated its goal of 5 million units by 2030.

Risks That Could Shrink Your $1,000

The biggest risk is valuation. Tesla trades at a trailing P/E of 402 and a forward P/E of 185, so the share price leaves very little room for missteps. Spending is also pressuring profits.

R&D rose to $2.76B from $1.63B, GAAP operating income fell 55.79% year over year, and free cash flow dropped 61.63%. Capex guidance is now about $20 billion for the year, and Tesla has lined up capacity to borrow up to $30 billion.

Analysts have also cut their numbers. The 2027 EPS consensus was $2.5908 90 days ago and has since fallen to $2.1457. On the operating side, tight battery supply is limiting vehicle output.

International FSD depends on regulators, and Musk expects Optimus to need “at least a year, maybe a little longer” to reach its target production rate. With a beta of 1.92, the stock tends to swing more sharply than the market. It is down 14.76% year to date.

Bottom Line for a $1,000 Tesla Stake

By the 2030 milestones, the model puts a $1,000 Tesla position anywhere from $999.35 to $1,513.49, and the base case is $1,182.08.

Over the full five-year horizon, the range runs from $1,023.80 to $1,634. Whether Tesla reaches the high end depends on how well it executes on autonomy and energy. Every figure here is a modeled scenario that can change, and none of it is guaranteed.
