Apple Keeps Hitting Record Highs. Bitcoin Hasn’t Set One All Year. Which Is the Better Buy?
Apple keeps setting records while Bitcoin slides further from its peak, but the real question for retirement investors goes beyond recent performance. The winner of this comparison might surprise anyone who assumes crypto always wins the long game.
Apple (NASDAQ: | AAPL Price Prediction AAPL) is on a roll, consistently hitting new highs. On October 13, 2026, its stock peaked at an intraday high of $348. It crossed the $5 trillion market value threshold for the first time on October 14 and ended the trading session on October 16 with another record close at $343, marking an impressive 26.7% gain for the year.
In contrast, Bitcoin (CRYPTO:BTC) has struggled. It hit a high of $126,080 on October 6, 2025, and has not set a new high in 2026. Bitcoin trades around $81,977 as of October 18, 35% below that peak, and has declined 6.8% in 2026.
So, in the Apple vs. Bitcoin comparison, which investment is more suitable for retirement funds that investors can’t afford to lose?
Apple Excels in Income and Buybacks

Apple rewards its shareholders with returns. While its 0.31% dividend yield may seem small, the board increased the quarterly dividend by 4% to $0.27 in April and approved an additional $100 billion for share buybacks. When a company buys back its shares, fewer shares remain, so each remaining share represents a larger portion of the company’s profits.
In the June quarter alone, Apple returned $33 billion to shareholders, with $25.8 billion coming from buybacks. This distribution was made possible by a 27.1% increase in net income, totaling $29.8 billion.
On the other hand, Bitcoin is a digital currency with a capped supply and no corporate entity behind it, meaning it generates no earnings or dividends. Its price fluctuations are driven by new investments from sources like ETF buyers and corporate treasuries. Therefore, in this round, Apple comes out on top.
Bitcoin’s Volatility Can Hurt Retirees More

Over the past year, Apple has risen by 39.3%, while Bitcoin has dropped by 23.4%. Although Bitcoin rose 26.1% in the 60 days leading up to October, it remains 35% below its peak.
This price disparity can be especially detrimental for retirees relying on their investments for income. A significant decline means they would have to sell more Bitcoin to cover their expenses, locking in potential losses. With decades to wait for a recovery, younger investors may handle Bitcoin’s wild price swings better than those who are 65 or older.
Apple does carry its own risks; it trades at about 45 times earnings, which some consider steep. Additionally, management has warned of rising memory costs in the September quarter. However, Apple has beaten earnings-per-share estimates for nine consecutive quarters, giving it an edge in risk management.
Bitcoin’s Long-Term Returns Are Impressive, but Apple Is More Reliable

In terms of long-term performance, Bitcoin shines with an astonishing 12,800% gain over the past decade, compared to around 1,180% for Apple. However, this figure starts from a much lower price of approximately $631 in October 2016, when Bitcoin was still growing. Over the last five years, Bitcoin has risen by 31.6%, while Apple’s stock has surged by 143.1%.
Looking forward, Apple must maintain sales momentum, and the signs are promising. iPhone revenue rose 22% in the June quarter, and management forecasts 9% to 11% revenue growth for the September quarter. CEO Tim Cook has described the supply challenges as a “demand forecast issue,” suggesting iPhone and Mac sales have exceeded Apple’s expectations.
In contrast, Bitcoin’s success largely relies on a steady influx of new buyers, which is a less stable foundation. For this reason, Apple also looks better for the future.
Is Apple or Bitcoin a Better Investment for Retirement?
In the Apple vs. Bitcoin debate, Apple is the healthier choice for retirement. It provides steady earnings, a growing dividend, and consistent buybacks, while Bitcoin has fallen 35% from its peak. Bitcoin may appeal more to younger investors who can take a small, speculative position and wait years for a recovery. However, retirees choosing Bitcoin face significant price fluctuations that could force them to sell at a loss.
Apple’s next test will be its pricing strategy, particularly with its new $1,999 iPhone Duo, which may reveal whether consumers are willing to continue paying a premium for the brand. Our perspective could shift if Apple’s next earnings report misses its 9% to 11% revenue guidance while Bitcoin breaks back above its $126,080 record, a 54% climb from its current price.
