VGT’s $58 Billion AI Chip Concentration Could Derail Your 2027 Returns

Vanguard Information Technology Index Fund ETF Shares (NYSEARCA:VGT) appears diversified on its fact sheet, but the semiconductor sleeve has become the fund’s defining position. Semiconductors represent about 36% of VGT, and applied to roughly $160.6 billion in assets, that works out to about $58.2 billion riding on the AI chip trade. That figure is derived from Vanguard’s published industry mix, not a fixed allocation the firm discloses.

NVIDIA (NASDAQ:NVDA | NVDA Price Prediction) alone accounts for roughly 17% of the portfolio, while Broadcom (NASDAQ:AVGO), Micron (NASDAQ:MU) and AMD (NASDAQ:AMD) contribute another roughly 11% combined. The fund’s return engine has narrowed to a handful of chipmakers benefiting from data-center spending. VGT is up about 28% year-to-date and roughly 36% over the past year. Anyone buying VGT for broad technology exposure is really buying an AI infrastructure bet, and the question for 2027 is whether the underlying names can deliver the growth their prices already reflect.

Semiconductor Concentration Reshaped the Fund

Market-cap weighting reshaped VGT as AI spending redefined the sector. NVIDIA’s climb to a roughly $5.3 trillion market value pulled the index toward accelerators and away from legacy software.

The fund’s 0.09% expense ratio remains among the lowest in tech, so cost is not the issue. When roughly one dollar in six sits in a single stock, forward returns depend on that stock’s fundamentals more than on any diversification implied by 324 holdings. Broadcom and Micron sit within the same AI capex trade as NVIDIA, moving in step with the same hyperscaler purchase orders. Their fortunes rise and fall with the same hyperscaler purchase orders.

NVIDIA’s Guidance Drives the Bet

NVIDIA reported $96.22 billion in fiscal Q2 2027 revenue, up about 106%, with data-center revenue of $89.02 billion. Guidance for the next quarter is $108 billion. Jensen Huang told analysts NVIDIA expects fiscal 2028 revenue to grow “approximately 70%” and described the outlook as “supply-constrained”, signaling a longer AI spending runway.

The Vera Rubin platform commenced production shipments this month and has already drawn purchase orders from every major hyperscaler. Revenue opportunity per gigawatt rises from $25 billion on Blackwell to $40 billion on Rubin, so each generation compounds NVIDIA’s share of AI infrastructure dollars. Because NVIDIA accounts for 17.16% of VGT, that trajectory is the single most important variable for the ETF over the next two years.

Broadcom and Micron Ride the Same Wave

Broadcom reported $22.2 billion in fiscal Q2 revenue with AI semiconductor revenue of $10.8 billion, up 143%. Hock Tan guided fiscal 2027 AI sales “in excess of $100 billion”.

The XPU business, anchored by commitments from Google, Meta and OpenAI, gives VGT exposure to custom silicon that competes with NVIDIA yet still rides the same hyperscaler capex. Micron reported $41.46 billion in revenue, up about 346%, and has already shipped over $1 billion in HBM4 revenue.

Strategic customer agreements represent roughly $100 billion in minimum contracted revenue, and Sanjay Mehrotra expects tight memory conditions “beyond calendar 2027”.

Three Risks That Could Break VGT in 2027

Hyperscaler capex is projected to be near $800 billion in 2026 and $1.3 trillion in 2027, but any cut would land directly on VGT’s largest holdings. Custom accelerators from Google, Meta, and OpenAI could compress NVIDIA’s share of AI compute even as the total market grows.

Memory is the most cyclical piece. Micron shares are up about 666% over the past year, and any acceleration in DRAM or HBM capacity in 2028 could quickly turn today’s shortage into surplus. NVIDIA trades at a forward P/E of 26, a reasonable multiple, but VGT’s price already discounts continued triple-digit AI growth.

VGT still makes sense as a low-cost core holding for investors seeking AI infrastructure exposure and willing to accept semiconductor cyclicality. Anyone expecting the “broad technology” label to cushion a chip drawdown will find the fund now behaves like what it actually is.
