10 Teams With the Longest Championship Droughts

10. Philadelphia Flyers
> Sport:
Hockey
> Last year won: 1975
> Total championships: 2

Through much of the 1970s, the Philadelphia Flyers iced a team nicknamed the Broad Street Bullies. Under the leadership of team captain Bobby Clarke and head coach Fred Shero, the Flyers physically dominated other teams while winning back-to-back Stanley Cups in 1974 and 1975. Since the days of the Broad Street Bullies, Philadelphia has made it back to the playoffs many times, including six appearances in the Stanley Cup finals. With the exception of one bad stretch during the early 1990s, the Flyers have never missed the postseason in consecutive years. The current team — lead by players such as Claude Giroux, Jakub Voracek, and Wayne Simmonds, will be challenged to keep that record intact as the flyers missed the postseason last year.

9. Miami Dolphins

> Last year won: 1973
> Total championships: 2

From 1970 through 1973, the Miami Dolphins advanced to the Super Bowl in three straight years and won the second and third years behind the arm of Hall of Fame quarterback Bob Griese. The Dolphins seemed on their way to another championship ring in 1982 when they made it all the way to the Super Bowl but ended up losing to the Redskins. The following year, the team started quarterback Dan Marino. Under his leadership, the team took a 12-4 record in 1984 to Super Bowl XIX, which the team also lost. Marino remained the team’s quarterback for the next decade and a half, but he never played in another Super Bowl. If the team’s recent history is any indication, Miami will not end its championship drought any time soon. The team has only made it to the playoffs once since 2001, losing badly to the Ravens in a wildcard playoff game. The team has started the year with a 2-3 record.

8. New York Knicks
> Sport:
Basketball
> Last year won: 1973
> Total championships: 2

The last time the New York Knicks won the finals, Richard Nixon was in the White House. The team’s 1973 victory over the L.A. Lakers came just one year after the West Coast team beat the Knicks, four games to one, in the finals. In the decades since, the Knicks have had their ups and downs. Though they never won another final, the team made it to the playoffs 14 years in a row between 1988 and 2001. In the nearly decade and a half since, the Knicks have gone to the playoffs only four times, losing in the first round every time except for one.

Currently led by Carmelo Anthony, the team has seen better days. Last season, the Knicks lost 65 games and won only 17. While they are currently 4-0 in the preseason, what this year holds for the Knicks is uncertain. Their first game comes later this month in Milwaukee.
