The CAC 40 also closed lower, down about 0.1%, leaving the DAX's gain as the real outlier worth scrutinising when assessing continental European sentiment at the close.
For investors with broad European exposure, a day like this is a reminder that the region's major indexes can and do diverge sharply. A German tilt finished in positive territory while UK large-cap weighting lagged.
