The FTSE 100 ended the session at 10,852.16, shedding 48.93 points against a previous close of 10,901.09. What makes the move stand out is how isolated it was: the DAX in Frankfurt edged up 0.04% and the CAC 40 in Paris was essentially flat, down just 0.02%. London carried the entirety of Europe's equity loss on its own.
The card facts pin the selloff to a UK-specific rate story rather than any broad continental concern. Bank of England policymakers are already split between holding the current rate and hiking further, and that uncertainty is enough to keep pressure on UK-listed equities even on days when European peers are treading water.
The intraday chart shows the FTSE drifting lower through the morning before steepening its decline in the afternoon, briefly touching its worst levels near a 0.59% loss before partially recovering to close around 0.45% down. The BoE's next policy signal will be the key event to watch for anyone trying to judge whether this UK-versus-Europe divergence has further to run.
