The FTSE 100 closed at 10,862.95, just 0.45 points above its previous close of 10,862.50 — a change so small it rounds to zero. Intraday, the index was anything but flat: it slid as much as 0.3% in the first half of the session before clawing back to a brief peak near 0.32% in the afternoon, only to fade again into the close.
That round-trip pattern points to a market sitting on its hands rather than taking a view. With the Bank of England in focus, UK investors appear reluctant to put on meaningful positions in either direction while waiting for policy signals. The result was a session that generated movement without generating conviction.
Paris had a more decisive day. The CAC 40 closed up 0.15%, making it the busier of the two major European markets and suggesting French equities attracted some of the cautious money that London left on the sidelines.
