On January 31, 1980, a discount chain out of northwest Arkansas booked its billionth dollar of annual sales. Wikipedia’s History of Walmart entry describes the moment as making Walmart (NYSE:WMT | WMT Price Prediction) the fastest company to reach that level at the time, after just 18 years in operation. Sam Walton had opened his first store in Rogers, Arkansas on July 2, 1962. By the close of the 1970s, he had built the fastest billion-dollar company anyone had ever seen.
His heirs sit atop a combined fortune Bloomberg pegged at approximately $453 billion in November 2025, wealthier than Elon Musk’s then-individual net worth of $425 billion. Broader 2026 estimates place the family fortune in a range of $430 billion to $472 billion across three generations.
From One Store To Eleven States
By 1967, the family operated 24 stores in Arkansas doing $12.6 million in sales. Walmart went public in 1970 at $16.50 a share, raising nearly $5 million, with the family retaining 61% ownership. The stock moved to the New York Stock Exchange in 1972.
By 1975 the chain ran 125 stores with $340.3 million in sales. In 1977, Walton acquired 92 Kuhn’s Big K stores. By decade’s end, Walmart operated 276 stores in 11 states with 21,000 associates.
1980s: A Format For Every Aisle
Sam’s Club opened in Midwest City, Oklahoma in 1983, positioning the company against membership-warehouse rival Costco Wholesale (NASDAQ:COST). In 1984, Walton performed his famous hula dance on Wall Street after the company cleared an 8% pre-tax profit target. By its 25th anniversary in 1987, Walmart ran 1,198 stores with $15.9 billion in sales and 200,000 associates. The first Walmart Supercenter opened in Washington, Missouri in 1988.
At the 1990 annual meeting, Walton predicted revenue would reach $125 billion within a decade. In 1991, Walmart surpassed Sears as the nation’s largest retailer.
Founder’s Final Chapter
President George H.W. Bush presented Walton with the Presidential Medal of Freedom on March 17, 1992. Walton died on April 5, 1992 at age 74 following a battle with bone cancer. His net worth at death was estimated at nearly $25 billion.
Forbes as of February 2026 put S. Robson Walton at $145.1 billion and Jim Walton at $142.4 billion, with sister Alice Walton in a comparable range. The family owns roughly 44% to 49% of Walmart.
Where The Empire Stands Now
Walmart operates more than 10,900 stores across 19 countries, serves approximately 280 million customers weekly, and employs approximately 2.1 million associates. Fiscal 2026 revenue was $713 billion, with eCommerce representing 24% of net sales. The most recent quarter delivered revenue of $190.7 billion, up nearly 5% year over year.
