GE Vernova Falls 6% Despite Beat, Raise and $9B Trench Deal; Vertiv Holdings Soars 13%, Eaton and Quanta Services Tick Up

GE Vernova delivered a blowout quarter, a raised outlook, and a $9 billion grid deal, yet its stock still dropped sharply while a rival surged 13%. Something in that report is spooking investors, and the reason matters for anyone watching…

A Q3 2026 beat, a raised outlook and a major grid acquisition weren’t enough to lift GE Vernova (NYSE:GEV | GEV Price Prediction), even as a fellow power-infrastructure name rises on its own quarterly results. GE Vernova stock is at $845, down 6% in the early session.

Vertiv Holdings (NYSE:VRT) stock is at $236, up 13%, after the data center equipment maker posted its own third-quarter beat and raised its outlook. Eaton (NYSE:ETN) stock is at $390, up 1%.

GE Vernova Beats, Raises and Agrees to Buy Trench Group

Before the open on October 28, GE Vernova reported third-quarter revenue of $12.64 billion, up 27% from a year earlier. Adjusted earnings per share (EPS) at GE Vernova came in at $4.81, and both figures topped Wall Street’s consensus estimates.

Demand showed up most clearly in orders. GE Vernova booked $29.3 billion in third-quarter orders, up 96% organically, while its backlog climbed sequentially to a record $197 billion. CEO Scott Strazik stated that GE Vernova now expects its backlog to exceed $200 billion in the fourth quarter.

GE Vernova’s cash generation prompted the company to raise its 2026 free cash flow guidance to $16 billion to $17 billion from $11.5 billion to $12.5 billion. Management also lifted GE Vernova’s 2026 revenue range to $46.5 billion to $47.5 billion from $45.5 billion to $46.5 billion. On top of that, the company’s adjusted earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margin outlook moved higher, and its board doubled the share repurchase authorization.

The headline deal is Trench Group, a global leader in high-voltage grid equipment, which GE Vernova agreed to acquire for $9 billion. According to GE Vernova, Trench is projected to generate $1.9 billion in 2028 revenue with an adjusted EBITDA margin in the mid-30s. Scott Strazik noted that Trench brings approximately $5 billion in backlog and framework agreements.

GE Vernova Moves Apart From Vertiv and Its Peers

Several considerations could be weighing on GE Vernova after a release that initially lifted the shares before they reversed. Trench isn’t expected to close until late 2027, so its benefits sit well beyond the current outlook, and GE Vernova plans to fund the purchase equally with cash and debt. At 13x Trench’s projected 2028 adjusted EBITDA before synergies, the price GE Vernova agreed to pay is a large multiple.

Expectations were also elevated heading into the report. GE Vernova stock is still up 30% year to date, even after a decline over the past month. Is this a sell-the-news reaction to a quarter the market had already priced in?

Vertiv is getting the opposite reception for its quarter. The rally leaves Vertiv stock up 46% year to date. Chief executive Giordano Albertazzi declared, “We are in the middle of the largest infrastructure buildout and it’s accelerating.” Where Vertiv sells power management and cooling equipment that sits inside the data center, GE Vernova operates upstream in gas turbines, grid gear and a wind business that’s still reporting losses.

Quanta Services (NYSE:PWR) stock is at $584, up 1%. Eaton’s gain is similarly modest, and both moves look small next to the swings in GE Vernova and Vertiv, which suggests traders are responding to each company’s own report. Both names offer broader exposure: Eaton’s business spans utilities, data centers, commercial buildings and aerospace, while Quanta builds grid and power projects as an engineering, procurement and construction contractor.

GE Vernova’s Backlog Goal and Trench Timeline Come Next

GE Vernova must now show whether its backlog clears the level Strazik indicated for the fourth quarter. Regulatory approvals and financing for the Trench purchase also need to fall into place before the deal can close.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) reports results after the close on October 28, and data center spending plans from tech giants drive demand for GE Vernova’s turbines and grid gear as well as Vertiv’s power and cooling equipment (we covered seven of the suppliers riding that expansion, from power to cooling, in a free report you can grab here).

Optimists can point to a record backlog, a higher outlook and a deal that strengthens GE Vernova’s grid business. A more cautious read holds that a strong year for the stock left little room for a deal with a distant payoff and added debt. Investors may want to follow the Trench deal’s regulatory review closely as it proceeds.
