AGNC Investment Corp. specializes in providing private capital to the U.S. housing market, focusing on investments in mortgage-backed securities that are guaranteed by government-sponsored enterprises or U.S. government agencies. As a real estate investment trust (REIT), it primarily profits by distributing the majority of its taxable income to shareholders, avoiding most federal corporate income taxes. Originally known as American Capital Agency Corp., it rebranded to AGNC Investment Corp. in 2016 and is based in Bethesda, Maryland.
