A $514 Billion Cloud Backlog Has Not Moved the Stock Yet

Over the past week GOOG fell 0.57%. It is up 1.68% over the past month, 8.29% year to date and 37.99% over the past year. Shares trade about 15.7% below the 52-week high of $403.96 and about 44.2% above the low of $236.07.

Second-quarter revenue rose 24.23% to $119.80 billion, ahead of the $116.91 billion estimate. EPS came in at $9.11 against expectations of $3.04, though a $99.03 billion unrealized equity gain inflated that number.

Google Cloud revenue grew 82% to $24.77 billion. Alphabet also suspended its buyback and raised about $70 billion in equity and debt.

Why Bulls See $451 and Beyond

Google Cloud’s backlog reached $514 billion, with management expecting to recognize just over 50% as revenue within 24 months. Cloud operating margin expanded to 35.6% from 20.7% a year earlier.

API usage rose to 22 billion tokens per minute from 16 billion one quarter earlier. The Gemini app has 950 million monthly users. TPU system sales should add another lift, with most revenue from existing deals expected in 2027.

Wall Street generally agrees. Among covering analysts, 13 rate GOOG a strong buy, 42 a buy and 5 a hold, with no sell ratings. The consensus target is $419.65. The bull case points to $451.50.

What Could Go Wrong With a $185 Billion Spending Plan

Alphabet guided 2026 CapEx to $175 billion to $185 billion. Second-quarter spending of $44.92 billion drove free cash flow to negative $5.86 billion. Long-term debt grew from $46.5 billion to $98.2 billion. Management also warned that leasing third-party capacity will pressure Cloud margins in the near term. The bear case is $367.87.

Operating cash flow was $185.7 billion over the trailing 12 months, and interest coverage stands at 175.5x. Alphabet remains supply limited, meaning demand is running ahead of the expansion.

How Alphabet Compares to Microsoft, Meta and Amazon

Company Trailing P/E Operating Margin
Alphabet 14 32.06%
Microsoft 29 46.8%
Meta 27 41.4%
Amazon 35 11.2%

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) is Alphabet’s closest cloud rival. Azure grew 43%, well below Google Cloud’s 82%, yet Microsoft trades at about double Alphabet’s earnings multiple.

Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) competes with Alphabet for digital ad dollars. Its EPS missed expectations by 14.42%, and its operating margin fell to 31%.

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) is spending heavily on AI too. Its trailing free cash flow has turned negative at $7.6 billion, and AWS grew 37%. Equity gains inflate Alphabet’s P/E, but even after accounting for that, the peer group makes our target look conservative.

Cloud Momentum Tips the Scale Toward Upside

The 24/7 Wall St. price target of $434.48 has a buy rating at 70% confidence. Cloud growth speeding up at a discount valuation points to upside. Watch whether the backlog converts to revenue at higher margins and whether free cash flow turns positive.

Year Price Target from 24/7 Wall St.
2026 $362.61
2027 $439.13
2028 $525.02
2029 $571.83
2030 $635.79

Alphabet needs to keep executing its AI infrastructure strategy for these projections to hold. Returns on the spending increase, along with antitrust pressure, could swing outcomes significantly in either direction.
