Alphabet Is Only Up 3% This Year: Will Today’s Earnings Report Make or Break GOOGL Stock?
Alphabet has trailed its Big Tech peers all year while piling on debt and suspending buybacks to fund a massive AI expansion, and today's Q3 earnings report will reveal whether that bet is starting to pay off or deepening the…
A quiet 2026 for Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL | GOOGL Price Prediction) puts extra weight on the Q3 2026 earnings report the company’s scheduled to release after the market closes today, October 28. Alphabet stock is up 3% year to date (YTD), recently changing hands at $324.33.
Among other Big Tech names, Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT) stock is up 10% YTD to $528.42. Meanwhile, Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) stock is down 7% YTD to $612.88.
Why Alphabet Stock Has Stalled in 2026
Alphabet’s small YTD gain looks thin next to its longer record. Over the past 12 months, Alphabet stock is up 20%. More recently, the stock has slipped 6% over the past month. That slide includes a 5% drop over the past week.
The decline looks like shareholders weighing heavy AI spending at Alphabet against the eventual return. In Q2 2026, Alphabet’s capital expenditures reached $44.92 billion and its free cash flow turned negative at $5.86 billion. To fund that expansion, Alphabet lifted its long-term debt from $46.5 billion to $98.2 billion and suspended its buyback. Those moves gave the company more room to build AI capacity but left less cash flowing back to shareholders for now. All of that capex has to be powered, cooled, and wired by somebody, and we rounded up seven of those suppliers in a free report on the AI infrastructure buildout.
Heading into the report, Alphabet stock is up 0.7%. The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate at 3.75% to 4% on October 28 in a 10-2 vote, as two officials preferred a quarter-point hike. Treasury yields rose after the decision, and higher rates tend to weigh on the valuations of big growth stocks such as Alphabet. Such a situation raises the bar for Alphabet’s report.
What Alphabet Must Prove Against Microsoft and Meta
Alphabet’s best case is clear evidence that AI is lifting both Google Search and Google Cloud. In Alphabet’s Q2 results, Google Search & other revenue grew 17% and Google Cloud revenue jumped 82% to $24.77 billion. CEO Sundar Pichai stated in July that “Our popular AI features are driving Search query growth.” Proof that the capacity expansion is turning into revenue could help restart the stock.
Rising AI spending without matching revenue growth could deepen Alphabet’s stall instead. Competition is the other threat, since AI assistants from rivals, including Meta’s new Muse personal agent, give users fresh places to ask questions they once typed into Google. With 2026 capital spending guided to $135 billion to $145 billion, Meta is spending heavily to win the same users.
Across the peer group, Microsoft has outpaced Alphabet in 2026 and reports its own results this week. Microsoft stock is down 0.9%. The company runs a software-and-cloud model, selling Azure capacity along with Microsoft 365 and Copilot subscriptions to businesses, while Alphabet pairs a consumer search-advertising engine with a fast-growing cloud unit.
Meta stock is down 1% today. Over the past month, the stock has dropped 19%. Unlike Alphabet, Meta runs an advertising-and-social model, earning the vast majority of its revenue from ads across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and WhatsApp.
What to Watch Now
Alphabet’s Q3 report puts Google Cloud’s revenue growth and margins at the center, along with any update to the company’s AI spending plans and the direction of Google Search revenue. Strong cloud margins alongside steady search growth would suggest the AI expansion can pay for itself, which might pull Alphabet stock out of its 2026 rut.
Recent history shows how wide the range of outcomes can be for Alphabet. Both of its 2026 reports exceeded estimates, yet Alphabet stock rose 10% in reaction to Q1 and fell 7% in reaction to Q2.
On the other side, a larger spending plan without faster revenue could renew concerns about Alphabet’s free cash flow and debt. Any sign that search is losing ground to rival assistants would add to that pressure. Watch for how Alphabet stock responds once results land after the close, since that first reaction may set the tone into year-end. Before drawing firm conclusions, it may help to study how the reaction to Alphabet’s Q3 report plays out.
