Biden's Approval Ratings by State

As the November 2024 presidential election rapidly approaches, President Biden’s campaign faces  substantial challenges in gaining traction and winning over American voters. As Biden enters his fourth year in office, he finds himself among the least favored American presidents in recent history.

Based on Gallup polling data, Biden’s average approval rating in 2023 was just 39.8%, marking the lowest third-year average among elected post-World War II presidents, except for Jimmy Carter. While the Biden administration’s approval rating rose slightly to 41% in January of 2024, it still falls well below the 52% average among all presidents since 1938.

Using information sourced from Race to the WH, a group specializing in  election forecasting and political consulting, 24/7 Wall St. determined Biden’s approval rating in each state. States are ranked based on Biden’s current projected approval rating, with ties broken by population size. These approval ratings were compiled by Race to the WH using historical state-level polling data, and are current as of Feb. 2, 2024.

During his presidency, Biden’s approval ratings have fluctuated between 37% and 57%, as per Gallup. However, at the state level, support for the president often mirrors historical partisan voting tendencies.

Approval ratings for the Biden administration vary significantly across states, ranging from 50% to as low as 16%. Remarkably, Biden won in all but three of the 25 states where his voter support is highest during the 2020 presidential election. In contrast, he won only three of the 25 states where his approval ratings are currently at their lowest.

Despite predominantly negative public perceptions of the president in most states, popularity polls may not accurately predict Biden’s performance in November. The election outcome could be influenced by advancements, whether genuine or perceived, in critical policy areas like the economy and immigration over the next few months. Even if the President’s approval ratings remain low, winning in 2024 could still be feasible if a greater portion of voters disapprove of his Republican opponent.
