Why Is BNB Up Today? It’s Back Above $100 Billion and Up 12% This Month

BNB just reclaimed a $100 billion market cap and posted 12% gains this month, yet today it trailed nearly every major coin during a broad market surge. The reason reveals something fundamental about who actually holds BNB and why they…

Binance Coin (CRYPTO:BNB), the token for the Binance exchange, trades at $781 today after spiking 3.9% in the last 24 hours, 7.4% this week, and 12.1% over the past 30 days. Its market cap is now above $100 billion, making it the fourth-largest cryptocurrency.

By comparison, Bitcoin has climbed 5.3% in the last day, while Ethereum, XRP, and Solana gained 5.4%, 6.4%, and 6.6%, respectively. This means BNB’s daily increase is smaller than that of every major coin except TRON, which grew by 0.7%.

While BNB’s price may be trailing today, it has exceeded Bitcoin’s 10% gain over the last month and is just half a point behind Ethereum’s 12.6%. The key question now is why BNB’s rise is smaller on a day when the whole market is rallying.

BNB Rose Less Than Bitcoin Today Because Fewer Short Sellers Were Caught in It

Today’s market-wide gains were largely driven by forced buying. When Bitcoin surged past $84,000, exchanges liquidated $262 million in short positions within just one hour, according to CoinGlass. A short liquidation occurs when traders who borrowed coins and sold them, expecting prices to fall, can no longer maintain their margin as prices rise. The exchanges buy back the coins to close these positions, causing a further price increase.

BNB, on the other hand, has fewer short sellers. Most BNB holders aren’t betting against the token; instead, they hold it to pay lower trading fees on Binance, pay for transactions on BNB Chain, or earn staking rewards. This means that during market upswings, fewer traders are caught short with BNB, resulting in a smaller price surge compared to Bitcoin and Ethereum.

BNB’s 12% Month Came From Binance’s Business, and $100 Billion Is a Reclaim

BNB’s 12.1% rise over the past month comes from steady demand tied to Binance’s operations. It first climbed back above the $100 billion market cap during the first week of September. Despite briefly dipping below $750, it has now climbed back to $781. This suggests that buyers have actively entered the market on each dip, rather than waiting for a short squeeze.

Part of the reason for this growth is Binance’s strong business performance. On September 11, Binance reported holding 693,000 Bitcoins in reserve, a two-year high, indicating that customers are depositing more coins on the exchange. Each trade made with these coins receives a discount when paid with BNB, encouraging more usage.

Furthermore, BNB Chain has become a major platform for trading tokenized stocks, with a trading volume of around $3 billion a week in early September. This means that the SEC’s Innovation Exemption of September 17 aligns well with the business model that BNB Chain is already operating.

However, reaching a $100 billion market cap is reclaiming a previous level rather than setting a new record. BNB hit an all-time high of $1,370 in October 2025, with a market cap of nearly $190 billion, and it dropped to $535 in late June 2026 before this rally began. Crossing the $100 billion mark simply reflects the current willingness of investors to hold BNB at $781.

$800 Is the Level the BNB Price Has to Clear

The next major resistance for BNB is at $800, just 2.4% away. Since early 2026, BNB has struggled to close above this level, and its early September peak at $779 fell short. If BNB can close above $800, it could open the door to the $850 to $900 range, which is where it last traded in January 2026. However, a rejection at this level may send the price back toward $750.

While some analysts have mentioned a target of $1,500 for BNB, this number comes from promotional material rather than serious analysis and would require the coin to nearly double in price. The key point to monitor is the $800 level; breaking through this mark would determine if the consistent buying over the past month leads to higher prices. Meanwhile, reaching the previous high of $1,370 remains a distant target, requiring a 75% increase from current levels.

Why Is the BNB Price Up Today, and Does It Have Staying Power?

Today, BNB has risen on a market rally triggered by a short squeeze, as oil prices dropped for the fourth straight day and Bitcoin surpassed $84,000. BNB rose less than Bitcoin and Solana because fewer traders were betting against it, especially since it’s mainly traded on Binance.

BNB’s market cap is back above $100 billion, up 12% for the month. This growth comes as buyers consistently stepped in during August and September, supported by higher Binance reserves and increased volume in tokenized stocks on the BNB Chain.

Some may say the recent surge is just trend-chasing, but buying activity has been steady. It’s also worth noting that despite the rise, BNB is still 43% below its all-time high. A daily close above $800 could push prices toward $850.

However, if BNB fails to break past $800 while Bitcoin and Ethereum continue to rise, it might confirm that BNB is lagging behind its peers this quarter. Therefore, the critical level to watch is $800, and BNB is currently just $19 away from that mark.
