Microsoft Stock Could Be Closer to Its Next Big Breakout Than Investors Think

Azure demand is outpacing supply, the commercial backlog just hit a staggering new level, and Wall Street has almost no sellers on record. Whether that setup translates into a real breakout depends on one factor most investors are overlooking.

Microsoft (NASDAQ:MSFT | MSFT Price Prediction) is trading at $531.47 at noon on October 20, 2026. The 24/7 Wall St. price target is $649.73 over the next 12 months, implying 22.3% upside. Our model rates the stock a buy with high confidence.

Upside/Downside 22.3%

Confidence Level 90%

MSFT price target

A 90% confidence reading shows strong agreement across our data. Microsoft trades close to its current price on trailing earnings, forward estimates point higher, and Wall Street’s consensus target sits above both.

Azure demand still tops supply, and the signed backlog gives investors strong visibility into future revenue. I read the setup as a stock catching up to its fundamentals.

Azure’s 43% Surge Sparked a Powerful Rebound Since July

Shares slipped 1.79% over the past week but are up 7.63% over the past month, 32.87% since July 20 and 10.59% year to date. The stock sits 3.6% below its 52-week high of $551.15 and 52.5% above its low of $348.54.

The rebound followed a strong fiscal fourth quarter. Revenue rose 17.75% to $90.01 billion, and EPS of $4.74 beat the $4.24 consensus. Azure grew 43%, and commercial RPO jumped 84% to $678 billion.

Management guided for Azure growth of approximately 45% in constant currency this quarter, and MarketWatch named Microsoft one of Wall Street’s favorite AI earnings plays going into the report this month.

Why Bulls See $754 in Reach

CFO Amy Hood said “customer demand continues to exceed available capacity,” so every efficiency gain turns into revenue within the quarter.

Net additions of Microsoft 365 Copilot seats more than doubled from the prior quarter, GitHub Copilot reached 50 million users, and the company’s Maia 200 chip offers 30% better performance per dollar.

About 30% of RPO converts to revenue within 12 months. Analyst ratings stand at 14 Strong Buys, 39 Buys and 2 Holds, with no Sells. If execution holds up, our bull case reaches $754.68, or 42% upside.

Capex and OpenAI Concentration Are the Risks Worth Watching

Fiscal 2026 capex rose 79.62% to $115.95 billion, and free cash flow fell 6.46%. Guidance calls for first-quarter capex of over $50 billion. Excluding OpenAI, RPO grew just 25%. Windows OEM revenue is expected to fall in the high teens in fiscal 2027.

Bulls would point out that operating cash flow rose 34.35%, that much of the capex goes to short-lived chips Microsoft can adjust as demand changes, and that management expects operating margins to dip by less than a point. The bear case of $548.92 still implies a 3.3% gain.

Microsoft Sits Between Alphabet and Amazon on Valuation

In cloud, Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) competes directly, where Google Cloud grew 82% last quarter. Its trailing P/E of about 15 looks far cheaper than Microsoft’s, but a $99.03 billion equity gain inflated those earnings, and free cash flow turned negative.

Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) runs AWS, which grew 37%. The stock trades at a higher multiple with a much lower operating margin. Microsoft pairs the highest margins in this group with positive free cash flow, so its middle-ground multiple makes the 24/7 Wall St. price target look reasonable.

Company Trailing P/E Operating Margin
Microsoft 30 46.8%
Alphabet 15 32.1%
Amazon 36 11.2%

Our Model Stays Constructive at $649.73

The 24/7 Wall St. price target of $649.73 carries a buy rating and 90% confidence. What tips the scale is capacity: Microsoft has more demand than it can supply.

I’d stay constructive if Azure offers growth near the forecast 45% and free cash flow stays positive. I’d turn more cautious if capex keeps rising while backlog outside OpenAI slows. For now, the data supports the bulls.

Looking further out, here is where our model projects Microsoft could trade if current growth trends and market conditions hold.

Year 24/7 Wall St. Price Target
2026 $649.73
2027 $662.32
2028 $750.96
2029 $817.66
2030 $899.93

These estimates rest on Microsoft continuing to execute on its AI and cloud strategy. Results could land well above or below them depending on how quickly Copilot is monetized and what returns the company earns on its capex.
