Remarks made over the weekend by Nokia Corp. (NYSE: NOK) CEO Steven Elop appear to quell any notion that the company plans to enter the tablet market any time soon. The company has just released its first two smartphones using the Windows Phone operating system from Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) and is in no hurry to compete with the iPad from Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) or the devices using the Android operating system from Google Inc. (NASDAQ: GOOG) or the Kindle family of e-readers and tablets from Amazon.com (NASDAQ: AMZN.)Elop is cited in an article from Nasdaq, commenting that “Nokia does not have an exact plan, but we are studying the markets carefully. Perhaps we will come [to market] one day.”Nokia has been thought to be preparing a tablet for launch in the summer of 2012, but Elop’s remarks may put an end to that speculation. And while focusing on getting smartphones to market may be a sound tactic, strategically it leaves Nokia/Microsoft even further behind in the booming tablet market.
