The Electronic Entertainment Expo, aka E3, officially opens Tuesday, but the big players in the world of video games have the honor of announcing their new lineups early, and both Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) and Sony Corp. (NYSE: SNE) rolled out a wagonload of announcements Monday. Nintendo takes the stage Tuesday morning before the doors open to the show floor.

Sony kicked off its press conference by announcing a white PlayStation 4 coming in September along with a new Destiny game from the same studio that developed the Halo franchise for Microsoft. Like Microsoft, Sony previewed new versions of many popular games that will be coming to the PS4 later this year and into next. But then Sony shifted gears and spent some time talking about hardware and platforms.

First there’s PlayStation TV, a $99 box that will let users stream video, older PS titles, and games for the PS Vita to any TV. The device was first released last November as PS Vita TV in Japan and will be coming to the United States, Canada and Europe later this year.

Next, Sony is making its PlayStation Now streaming game service available to owners of both PS3 and PS Vita controllers. Some Sony TVs will also have PS Now available, making possible for users to stream games without owning a PlayStation. The company did not say which TV models would have the PS Now function.

And then it was more games. Those are what people want to see at E3 and Sony did not disappoint. Neither did Microsoft, and later it’s pretty likely that Nintendo won’t either.
