Marijuana Price Jumps Above $2,000

For the week ended Friday, July 1, the spot price index for a pound of cannabis increased 4.1% from $1,969 in the prior week to $2,049. According to the analysts at Cannabis Benchmarks, the simple average price for a gram rose from $4.87 to $4.91.

The futures price for the near month (August) jumped $60 to $2,140 per pound. For the month of September, the forward price fell from $2,140 to $2,120 a pound. The six-month forward price (January) rose to $1,725.

About two-thirds of the past week’s transactions occurred in a range of $1,707 to $2,745 per pound . Looking at forward pricing trends the analysts had this to say:

Outdoor grown flower from last year’s harvest continues to come to market in robust quantities, moderating the upward price pressure created by higher-priced indoor grown flower.  The August and September Forwards each decreased by $20 to $2,140 and $2,120 per pound, respectively, representing premiums of 4.4% and 3.5%, respectively, to the current Spot Price. … This week’s forward volume represented 10% of the total number of observed spot and forward transactions.  81% of the forwards had durations of at least two months.  45% had durations of three months.  32% of the forwards had deliveries extending through the fall harvest and into January.

Implied forward prices are expected to reach their peak in August at $2,140 a pound (down $20 from the prior estimate) before dropping to $1,650 in November.

Our price check at MJCharts.com indicates prices range from $27.19 a gram to a low of $3 in the all-cities index. The all-cities index price is $12.27 per gram, down 5 cents compared with the prior week. The overall average price for a gram of marijuana (all strains) in Colorado is currently $11.43 ranging from a high of $25 a gram to a low of $3.50. In California the price is $15.28 per gram, ranging from $27.19 down to $4.21 per gram; in Michigan the average price is $14.19 per gram in a range of $25 to $5; in Oregon the average is $10.83 per gram in a range of $20 to $3; and in Washington the average is $10.63 per gram, ranging from a high of $21 to a low of $4.00.
