Star Wars 3D Sales More Than Disappointing

If you couldn’t get any tech support on your PC this weekend, it may have been because of the 3D release of the old “Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace” came out.  The problem is that those I.T. support staff might have been about the only people in the audience.  Box Office Mojo said going into the weekend that Star Wars was going to have some tough competition, but that turned out to be an understatement of massive proportions.

The online movie tracking group reported that the 3D re-release of the Star Wars film came out in 2,655 individual theater screens and came in a dismal fourth place with only $23 million in projected ticket sales.  Journey 2 hit $27.55 million, Safe House hit $39.3 million, and the romance film ‘The Vow’ came in first at $41.7 million.

Before you worry too much about George Lucas and friends, we tallied up the whole value of the Star Wars franchise as far as sales to date: over $30 billion or so now, and Mr. Lucas himself is worth more than $3 billion.
