Skepticism Over Gingrich Promise Of $2.50 Gas

Newt Gingrich, running from well behind the pack in the Republican race made a promise during the Wednesday debate.

“I’ve developed a program for American energy so no future president will ever bow to a Saudi king again and so every American can look forward to $2.50 a gallon gasoline.”

He was short on specifics, because the promise makes no sense. Gas, based on the national average for regular per gallon, is about $3.60. Most economists expect it to hit $4 this summer. Gingrich will either have to find hundreds of millions of barrels of oil in the US–which can be tapped immediately or get the Saudis to sell their oil for $1 a barrel
