July 20, 2015: Markets opened higher on Monday then dove lower before turning around in the late morning to put on a half-day surge that is pointing toward a solid, if uninspired gain. Oil dropped below $50 a barrel briefly today and gold lost more than 2%. The dollar added a couple ticks as well today. Shortly before the closing bell the DJIA traded up 0.04% for the day, the S&P 500 traded up 0.05%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded up 0.14%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close Monday was Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) which traded higher by 2.58%% at $72.71. The stock’s 52-week range is $48.80 to $73.00. Trading volume was about 25% above the daily average of around 6.8 million. The company had no specific news today

Apple Inc. (NASDAQ: AAPL) traded up 1.71% at $131.94. The stock’s 52-week range is $93.02 to $134.54. Trading volume was somewhat above the daily average of around 46.4 million. There was a report that the company may introduce a less expensive gold Apple Watch. Also the company reports earnings tomorrow and that’s always exciting.

Microsoft Corp. (NASDAQ: MSFT) traded up 0.74% at $46.96. The stock’s 52-week range is $40.12 to $50.05. Trading volume remained about 35% below the daily average of around 34 million. The company won a contract to provide its Office 365 product to the 300,000 employees of General Electric Co.

The Walt Disney Co. (NYSE: DIS) traded 0.53% at $119.49. The stock’s 52-week range is $78.54 to $119.90, and the high was posted today. More than 4.2 million shares traded hands today, about 30% below the daily average of around 6.2 million. The company had no specific news today.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 15 are set to close higher today and 15 are on track to close lower.
