October 12, 2015: Markets opened mixed on Monday, but all three major indexes had bounced higher by noon, and all appear about to hang on to a modest gain for the day. Bond markets and banks were closed today, and trading was light on the equities exchanges. Crude oil for November delivery pulled back more than 5% today to settle at $47.10, while gold settled at $1,164.50, up 0.7% for the day. Equities were headed for a higher close shortly before the closing bell as the DJIA traded up 0.25% for the day, the S&P 500 traded up 0.10%, and the Nasdaq Composite traded up 0.15%.

The DJIA stock posting the largest daily percentage gain ahead of the close Monday was UnitedHealth Group Inc. (NYSE: UNH) which traded up 2.77% at $122.57. The stock’s 52-week range is $80.72 to $126.21. Trading volume was about 10% above the daily average of around 4.2 million. The company had no specific news today.

Nike Inc. (NYSE: NKE) traded higher by 1.14% at $126.34. The stock’s 52-week range is $83.85 to $127.10, and the high was posted today. Trading volume was about half the daily average of around 4.2 million. The company had no specific news today, but continued a rally begun on Friday.

Visa Inc. (NYSE: V) traded up 1.45% at $75.05. The stock’s 52-week range is $48.80 to $76.92. Trading volume was about half the daily average of around 8.8 million. The company had no specific news today.

The Boeing Co. (NYSE: BA) traded up 0.72% at $140.71. The stock’s 52-week range is $115.14 to $158.83. Trading volume was more about 60% below the daily average of around 3.8 million. The company announced an acquisition of a pilot training software company this morning, but the real price moving news was a report that India’s SpiceJet may be ready to order more than 200 airplanes (not all from Boeing) in the next six months.

Of the Dow 30 stocks 16 are set to close higher today and 14 are on track to close lower.
