Former Louisiana Brothel Hits Market for $305,000

Thinkstock

The home seems attractive enough for potential buyers of century-old homes in rural Louisiana. The house was built in 1876, has two stories with a front porch on each. It was once part of a plantation. Out back, there are oak trees covered with swamp moss. Incidentally, it was home to a brothel, according to Realtor.com.

Listing agent Harriet Reynolds commented:

This is what I know and what was passed down to the owner. The downstairs used to be a saloon. It was open to the lawn and really lively. Upstairs, they used to run a brothel.

Most clients were sailors from ships docked on Barataria Bay.

The home, at 7368 Barataria Blvd., Marrero, La., is south of New Orleans, east of Lake Salavador, and just west of the Mississippi River. The home has only been on the market since February.

It has four bedrooms, two full baths and an interior square footage of 2,904. It also has a four-car garage and stocked pond, presumably for buyers who may enjoy fishing.

Based on photos of the house, it does not need any immediate attention in terms of paint or fix up of the bathrooms or the kitchen.

The listing:

Aspiring johns or madams need not apply, because Louisiana criminalized prostitution not long after the home was built.

So much for rental income.
