The Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) has been honoring top-selling musical artists since 1958 through its gold and platinum certification awards. In 1997, Elton John became the first ever recipient of the diamond award, the RIAA’s highest honor, for his single “Something About The Way You Look Tonight / Candle In The Wind.” Diamond status recognizes singles that have achieved 10 million or more in sales. ( Also see Elton John’s best albums .)
To determine all singles that have achieved Diamond certification, 24/7 Tempo reviewed data on certified U.S. singles sales from the RIAA . The RIAA awards Diamond certification to songs that have sold at least 10 million units in the United States – including downloads and streams, computed at a rate of 150 of either equaling one unit. Singles were ranked based on certified U.S. sales as of October 2023. Data on Billboard Hot 100 chart performance is current through the week of Oct. 14, 2023.
Out of the 120 singles that have been certified diamond by the RIAA, 66 of them reached the #1 spot on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. 16 different artists had a song that remained at #1 for 10 or more weeks. The collaboration “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X featuring Billy Ray Cyrus holds the all-time record, having spent 19 total weeks at #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 on its way to selling a staggering 17 million units. ( Click here for the artists with the longest streaks on Billboard Hot 100 .)
Interestingly, 11 of the diamond-certified songs did not even crack the top 10 of the Billboard Hot 100. For example, “Pursuit of Happiness (Nightmare)” by Kid Cudi featuring MGMT & Ratatat only made it to #59 on that chart, yet still managed to sell over 10 million copies, thereby reaching diamond status. This demonstrates that some songs can have tremendous commercial success through channels beyond radio airplay.
Here are all 120 songs that have ever been certified Diamond.
