America's Most Dependable Car: Every Major Brand Ranked

Between unionizing plants and airbag safety recalls, Stellantis, a multimillon dollar car manufacturer, is continuing to make headlines. In early June 2024, a software malfunction caused a recall of over 200,000 SUVs and pickup trucks. The failure lies in the stability control system, a safety feature that prevents a loss of steering capabilities when the driver loses control of the vehicle. This component is critical in emergency situations, such as icy roads. Owners with cars impacted by this recall will be able to take their car to a Stellantis dealer to upgrade their software at no charge.

According to J.D. Power’s 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study, there were an average of 190 problems per 100 vehicles after the first three years of ownership, in 2024. That average is up 2.2% from 2023. Most of the problems reported stem from tech related issues. These include connectivity issues with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, as well as failures with voice recognition software. Other more serious problems were related to vehicle controls, driving assistance features, and the powertrain.

Some automotive brands are demonstrably more reliable than others. The 30 brands on this list are owned by 16 different companies. Among the brands on this list, the number of problems reported per 100 vehicles ranges from 135 to over 300. (Here is a look at the cars that hold their value the longest.)
